How to review your mutual fund portfolio: a quarterly checklist

A simple quarterly checklist to catch drift, underperformance, and overlap before they cost you returns.

Most investors either never review their portfolio or review it every time the market drops β€” both are bad habits. A quarterly cadence catches problems early without pushing you into reactive, emotion-driven decisions.

Four things to check each quarter: has your asset allocation drifted from target because one asset class ran up faster than the others; is any fund underperforming its category benchmark for more than 2-3 consecutive quarters; do you now hold multiple funds that are effectively duplicating the same large-cap exposure; and has anything changed in your own life (income, goals, timeline) that should change the plan itself.

None of this requires a spreadsheet obsession β€” it’s a 20-minute conversation with your relationship manager, four times a year.
